For infants and children under 6 years of age. PLEASE CALL THE PARISH OFFICE (562-698-0107) TO SEE THAT A PRIEST WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN YOU ARRIVE.
When you arrive, please fill out a Baptism registration. Only a parent may register his or her child for Baptism. It is not necessary that both parents come, nor is it necessary to bring the child. Please bring the certificate of birth of your baby or child; the secretary will photocopy it and return it to you.
You will have a personal interview with a priest regarding your baby’s baptism. Please note that the Church has strict requirements for the godparents: a godparent must be 16 years of age or older; there must be at least one godparent; if there are two, one must be a man and one must be a woman; one godparent must be Catholic; the Catholic godparent(s) must be practicing their faith by attending Mass weekly, etc., and, if married, must be married in the Catholic Church. The priest can help clarify these questions for you.
You will be asked to pay a stipend of $40 at the end of your interview (cash, check or credit card).
There is a mandatory Baptismal instruction forum of two hours for parents and godparents. The secretary can help register you for the instruction, which takes place in Smith Hall on the Sunday afternoon (2:00 PM) before the Baptism. There are baptisms once a month in English and once a month in Spanish on a Saturday afternoon in St. Mary’s Church at 12:30 PM.
The Catholic godparent(s) must be confirmed and have received First Communion, practicing their faith by attending Mass weekly, etc. and if married, must be married in the Catholic Church.
